"Houston the largest city to elect openly gay mayor"..........
Wow! Seems like only yesterday, that we allowed openly black and openly female candidates to be elected to public office, and not that long ago, for those two demographic groups to vote. What's next? A gay black woman candidate? When and where will it stop?
Folks I have news for you. We here in Houston have elected Annise Parker to public office on six different occasions. She has done us a damn good job. That is why she is our mayor elect rather than a shady lawyer. Had nothing to do with sexual orientation or skin color. The best person for the job won, and I can't remember the last time anyone even mentioned her sexuality around here, before said sleazy lawyer's campaign geniuses thought it might be nifty to mention that little irrelevant tidbit.
Just shows how the rest of the country is starved for "dirty laundry", listening to CNN and the networks. So I suppose in closing, I should offer at one little bit of such news in the sports world:
Number one on PGA Tour
Breaking newsFox News and CNN have just reported that Elin Nordegren moved to the top of the money list on the PGA Tour yesterday after ‘beating’ the world’s number one golfer.
The news came after the world’s number one golfer inadvertently played the wrong hole…
Political Correctness or Culture War?

In the past year or so we have encountered several incidences where the
term “ political correctness run amuck” was inserted into the discussion.

You know, for a society that seems very consumed with everyone's sexual orientation, for the life of me, I cannot remember the last time I had to state my sexual orientation on an application, and enrollement form, or any kind of official document.
The Tiger Woods' thing--you are cracking me up way too early this morning! Thanks for the laugh.
Actually, it was more like he got caught in a "do over"(and over, and over), on the back nine.
This is the primary problem with term limits. Because the Houston mayor is limited to three terms, we have to let the good go and heaven help us what comes along to replace him. The only solace I have is that now there is a real, viable candidate to beat the pants off Governor goodhair in the next round.
Yeah, that's the funny thing. May I have to check that Demoncrat box on a ballot? I sure as hell ain't gonna go for fric or frac to lead Texas. And while I love Kinky, and voted for him last time, he is in reality not a viable candidate. Bill White would not have been the person I would have voted for 6 years ago. I was an Orlando Sanchez gal. Still, he has surprised me and done an excellent job for Houston, and lest we not forget, he has held higher positions before; i.e., the energy commissioner under Clinton, if I recall correctly. So, no, I had no interest in him as mayor, but every once in a while, I don't mind being proven wrong. I think he made the best decision he could by going for governor now instead of the Senate.
None of the candidates (particularly the independents) for Mayor were worthy of the position as far as I am concerned. I do wish someone better had gotten into the race, but it is what it is. I wouldn't have minded Gene Locke, had I been able to vote. I surely wouldn't give the time of day to Parker. All I can see in my head is Kathy Whitmire, and believe me, that's the stuff nightmares are made of.
But I HAVE been wrong before, and I DO hope to be proven wrong again.
Let the games begin!
It's okay to check the Dem box ever so often. This governor's race would be a good time to do just that.
The Democratic candidate in the 2010 governor will lose anyway.
Bill White may seem to be the strongest, but he will still lose. Houston under White became a pro-illegal city. That alone will sink White's chances.
This is coming from a Democrat like myself. I wish the Democrats of the crossroads will pick a candidate to challenge Geanie Morrison.
J - I can't speak to the issue of the Crossroads. But please don't sell Bill White short. He is a good manager, and likely has a better shot than my favorite, Kinky Friedman, at beating Perry and KBH. The Palestinian, Farouk Shami, likely will not be a factor of any consequence, so if Kinky can land the Ag Commish job, he will have a chance to show his talents, and maybe become a viable gubernatorial candidate in the next election. The first order of business is to see that neither Guv Goodhair, nor Kay B, Hucthinson gets the nod. We can regroup from that point.
Openly gay mayor...
You forget one thing.
According to Chris Cobler's can-do-no-wrong people on the Advocate staff, Mayor is spelled Mair.
