What we imagine when an editor bleeps out a word or deletes a post is often far worse than the offensive original. You can't build trust in journalism with a heavy hand on the delete button.
He should consider himself lucky at this point, that the only ethics issue he has to deal with is the lack of any in his current online hatchet man comments cop job, rather than anyone bringing up reasons he is here in the first place as opposed to in a loftier position he was planning for elsewhere. At some point, quality, accuracy, reliability, or lack thereof, and the superficial, tabloid appearance of the Advocate, and the fact that the online version, is nothing more than a Chris Cobler Myface site, subject to his whims as to what is allowed and what is not, will be the reason for his exit. Yes, we are evolving toward an online world, but it has to happen in a more open and less gestapo like atmosphere if those driving it expect to keep their jobs. Whether it is people who put a check in the mail for their subscription, or people who register on a site and log on for their news, you can only screw and strike down so many before the rest become wary and demand change.

Born on the bayou where Texas and Louisiana meet on the Gulf Coast. A kid in the '50s, so my heroes were Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Raised in a fishing village, ...Adrift, I grew up on boats and made my money as a kid the way kids in the '50s and '60s did - cutting lawns, throwing a paper and bagging groceries until I was big enough to work on a shrimpboat. Best job I ever had was piloting a ten ton crew boat, worst was probably chopping cotton. I have stood atop Mayan pyramids deep in the Yucatan jungles, and on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. I am equally at home at a musical on Broadway, or a honky tonk full of shrimpers and tug boat hands. The best ten years of my life were spent in the '70s in Austin, Texas. The last thirty have been spent in the far western 'burbs of Houston working as a petro gypsy in the engineering business. I have had my share of adventures, several of which I probably shouldn't have survived. I am at age 58, the proud father of twelve and fourteen year old sons, so... Onward through the fog!

Yeah. try posting something to shake up Chris and you will be deleted faster than JackRobinson.
I have this mental image of Cobler with a Blackberry in each hand so he can Twitter on one, check the Advocate forum on the other.
Initially he seemed kind of laid back, but I've decided he is completely anal about the comments. It's a wonder he gets anything done.
